The wife of nobleman Shin proves unable to bear an heir so they finds a surrogate, the fiery young Ok-nyo (Kang Soo-yeon). While Ok-nyo is hidden and constrained, treated as necessary device rather than a human, she and Shin eventually fall in love, with dire consequences for both - and questions for the child that they conceive.
